The Exquisite Dream Project was carried out at The Green Hill Center for North Carolina
Art in Greensboro, North Carolina between February, 2002 and June, 2002. For one week in
February, visitors to Green Hill were invited to contribute doodles on the three walls of
their outer gallery. During the same time I incorporated and reprocessed many of the doodles
onto the wall above. This project was part of an exhibition on drawing. It was my first
installation so I chose to limit the medium to black charcoal. During the installation I also
documented the process and then created a 30 minute video on the process that was shown
during the remaining exhibition. A grant from the Christopher Foundation of Winston-Salem
paid for the cost of that video. A copy is available for interested parties on request.
Public response was strong to this installation. Many people, old and young, enjoyed drawing
on the walls. Even the Mayor of Greensboro, Keith Holiday, and his daughter Camberly,
participated (Camberly was a student of mine and sadly soon after died.) Everyones enthusiasm
helped convince me that this process needed repeating and further exploration.
