AUDIENCE<=>ARTIST: A Blog on audience-influenced art and the artists who make it. Have you ever been to an art gallery or museum and experienced a work of art that change because of your presence? Sounds intriguing doesn't it? I am artist who explores the relationship between artist and audience and am always interested in finding other artist who do the same type work. This blog will help me keep up with those I come across while also sharing their work with others. I hope you enjoy the commentary and the art. And please send me links to other artists that fit into this niche.

www.mine-control.com Zachary Booth Simpson is doing some amazing things with interactive digital media. For example, imagine walking into a gallery and casting a shadow on the wall that seems to be raining color. You raise your arms and "catch" the color in the bowl of your arms. This color can then be pored or mixed with other people's collections of color. Amazing but real! The University of North Carolina at Greensboro has bought this very installation from Zachary and they plan to install it in their new student center. And all they had at my college's student center was pool and bowling!

www.artinteractive.org Art Interactive in Cambridge, MA has devoted its entire mission to interactive art making. Makes me want to head North and check them out.

www.foundmagazine.com Found Magazine puts a neat twist on this audience/art thing. These folks share cool stuff found by others; old love letters, birthday cards, to-do-lists, and such. The mystery and humor of the items makes for intriguing viewing.

Cathy McLaurin of Boston, Mass. is a unique artist who is making art shaped by her audience. In her case she is collecting peoples secrets. She has thousands already and has created installations with them.(I've asked her for a picture.) Talk about intriguing stuff! She asked me for my secrets and sad to say I cannot think of anything worth submitting. But if you have a good one you can mail it to her at: Cathy McLaurin, Essex Art Center, 56 Island St. Lawrence, MA 01840 or email to her at candg111@adelphia.net . Cathy asks that you do not reveal your name.

Alex Lebowski has been creating art via personal advertisements for the last 19 years. For each painting in the series "Hidden America" she has responded to a personal ad placed by someone in each state of our union. Through letters, never in person, she has come to know and then painted the life stories of the person she contacted. These "commisions" are then given to the person free of charge. Check out the link to learn more and see some of the works she has created in this revealing series.

Daniel Rozin @ the Interactive Telecommunications Program, NYU has created mirrors made of wood, trash, and metal balls. For Real! They reflect the viewer using computer technology in a postmodern combo with wood and other non-digital stuff. Truly cool!

My Virtual Museum by Susan Mullally is an engaging web site that documents everyday peoples choice of precious items to include beneath a museum case. Photographs of each person with their objects and statements about their choices are insightful and touching.
