In "Have you eaten yet?" I worked with students from UNC's Singapore Summer Immersion Program. On a bright fall day I gathered with them to listen to their stories and encourage them to draw images that reflected their experiences. I left that night with many wonderful drawings; some funny, some touching, all insightful. Over the next month I worked in my studio to interpret the images and fashion a painting that speaks to what I felt were the core themes of the trip. I believe one of these themes is "giving"; from the donor who funded the program to the students, from those the students meet overseas, and from the students back to the world and UNC. On November 12th, 2004, the painting was given to the Mr. Alston Gardner, founding chair and sponsor of the Singapore program, at a banquet celebrating the ground breaking of the new UNC Global Education Center. A video was made that allowed several students to thank Mr. Gardner on behalf of the 50 participants. A video that explained how I used the students drawings and the process of creating the work was also shown. I hope to have a flash file of that video up soon.
